We asked two top makeup artists to dish on the best makeup looks for short hair. Check out their tips on tips, lashes, and everything in between.
• When hair is short, your best bet for makeup is "focusing on one feature," according to Michelle Bearse, makeup artist for the Mario Russo Salon in Boston, MA. For eyes, the tendency is "to do more of a dramatic, smoky eye," but instead of the typical black, Bearse sees a trend toward less harsh browns and grays. For cheeks, Bearse suggests going for more contouring to sculpt the face, since your bone structure is now in the spotlight. Finish the look with just a touch of color on the apples, since soft, healthy looking skin is the perfect complement to your new 'do. As for that kisser, glossy tips go great with short hair, providing a little gleam and sparkle to your look.
• Kim Busse, makeup artist for Graham Webb, says, "When you have short hair, it's really an eye and a cheekbone focus." She advises women to "bring the attention away from the jawline and up to the cheeks." Adding highlighter on top of the cheekbone can accomplish this. Also, Busse says brows look best when they're groomed and emphasized; that way they can properly frame those peepers. For eyes, "more smokiness and mascara" is Busse's preference, with one exception:
"When you've got a lot of bang, then your emphasis is going to be on the tip." For a perfect pout, Busse says cranberry colors are going to be "huge" and steers clients toward "3-D rubies and garnets with shimmer."
