La Cucaracha betyder kakerlakken. Sangen stammer fra den mexicanske borgerkrig 1910-19, hvor en forhadt militær person ved navn Carranza her sammenlignes med en kakerlak. Denne form for sange kaldes 'carridas' og opstår blandt folket, når det politiske tryk skal lettes gennem vise- eller fællessang.
